Got a few questions about recommended fuel to oil ratios for various outboards.

1946-49 Johnson Td20 and Hd-25 – I've read original was sixteen:1 and some say at present to run 24:i. Why not run original ratio?

1978 Artic Spirt 20Hp (aforementioned motor as Suzuki DT-twenty) – I don't know what is the recommended. twoscore:i?

    Thanks for any input.

Opinions volition always vary on this topic. For T and H series motors, I stay with the recommended xvi:ane mix using TCW-iii rated oil. Back in the day, 40W automotive oil was used, but information technology left a lot of deposits.

Agreed, stay with xvi/1 on the TD and HD motors. Both have a rotary valve built in to the crankcase that needs the extra lubrication. If you lot run them on 50/1, it volition ruin them. I don't know on the Spirit engine.

i never killed a motor by using as well much oil… 😉

I had a DT50 the manual said forty/i TCW3, but if you used Suzuki oil the ratio could exist 50/1.
I also had a 15HP Suzuki that was labeled on the motor 100/one. I always use recommended ratio except for the100/1.

ok, I agree with crosbyman that oils are probably amend today, merely i like the thought of the 16:1 actress oil. As long as the motors are not fouling plugs i cant see the damage in the extra oil. Might even assistance to fend off some the mosquitos on the back lakes haha. Now if i could just figure out this Artic Spirit 20Hp every bit it will exist my master daughter this summer.

I believe the Chill is a 50:1 ratio. I have the Suzuki counterpart that I run twoscore:ane on though. I always run on the side of circumspection with a little extra oil.

Oils are ameliorate today. That means y'all tin run proper ratios without fouling plugs and having carbon build up!

The HD and TD NEED the sixteen:1 ratio to run properly. They run like crap on a leaner mix. The 16:i mix helps lubricate, but also SEAL.

If a motor is smoking and dumping backlog oils into the water they are non properly in melody or the oil is junk. I am a proud supporter of the XD series of oils by BRP. I run the XD 30 in all of my vintage motors at PROPER ratio. None of my motors excessively smoke or dump excess oil into the water.

I havent had any of these motors in the water yet, they have been winter projects. Only i have an 1974 Evinrude 15HP and i find it smokes when going from trolling to loftier speed. I Run 40:ane in it and figured this was "normal". Maybe i'll have to tune up that carb besides. I usually run synthetics, I've never bought a new motor so i don't know why i run it, merely i effigy while i own the motor I'll run decent oil through them. Thanks for the tid fleck on the Chill motor, i'll requite 40:1 a try.

    quote Shane.R13:

1974 Evinrude 15HP smokes when going from trolling to high speed.

This is 1 sign of a motor getting depression on compression or running as well cold. The thermostat in these motors must exist installed and working properly to keep them up to temperature. If the thermostat is good, a pinch test and slightly hotter spark plugs may be required. This is after assuming the idle mixture isn't set as well rich.

Running less oil is more than about concern for the water
were you run yous motors and protecting the opportunity
to run them. Information technology only takes a small government similar a
home owners clan to control your access to water.
There are already lakes out westward that don't allow ii
cycle motors anymore. Putting a large oil slick on the
water or running a smoky motor can get the attention
of the wrong people. Manufactures were
recommending the reduction in the corporeality of oil to
run with the introduction of an oil made specially to be
mixed with gasoline. (TCW) It important to be
comfortable with the amount of oil your running because
your not going to take a fun day if you call up yous could be
hurting yous motor. This is some of the factory oil
recommendations put out in the early seventy's. You may find
this helpful in deciding what is the correct amount of oil for yous.

I accept the same list Tubs posted in my 'fourscore Parts Guide but I strongly disagree with a few things on it. Beginning, I would never run an AD or pre '61 CD motor on anything less than 16:1 because of their rod bearing design. The aforementioned goes with the three equus caballus JW-JH series of motors although they will live on 24:1 mix. At least they got the TN right at xvi:1 as information technology needs the extra oil to seal itself.

You might notice that lots of these 50:1 motors from the sixties and seventies take vanished but in that location's still lots of motors in use from the fifties and forties. I wonder if it has something to do with the little chip of extra oil added to the mix?

Agree with Mumbles. That list is crazy. Good manner to destroy our hobby in my opinion. I personally would like to encounter my grandkids enjoying my motors, and their grandkids afterward them. I have a SHED full of Johnson CDs and ADs where the owners followed "Bob the Builders" advice down the street and ran them on 50:i and they detonated. Spending an actress couple bucks on oil per tank is NOT going to destroy our Lakes and Water front. Being irresponsible will. Keep your motor in proper tune and enjoy them.

I take my kids effectually about once a month in the summer time to pick upwards trash from around our local lakes nosotros relish. Teach our young ones to take care of our wild animals. We don't need to destroy our hobby and the express number of motors left running to exercise that however. Simply my 2 centos.

I believe that twenty to 1 instead of 24 to 1 and 40 to i instead of fifty to ane give some cheap insurance, and I like that these ratios are easy to mix, existence ane quart to 5 gallons and i pint to v gallons, respectively. My 16 to 1 motors go sixteen to i, but if it's a short run in a exam tank, I sometimes use twenty to one for convenience because I usually have a tin mixed. I buy generic TCW3 oil by the gallon at Walmart or Fleet Subcontract.
I do non skimp on oil. In my PO 22 HP Johnson, I run viii to ane as the decal says. It does not smoke subsequently it gets upwardly and runnin'.

Notation that the Champion Hotrod racing motors called for a 4 to ane mix! When practise you start calling them a diesel?
